  • 3-D Flow Analysis using CFD methods is now accepted as an integral part of the engineering design by major companies around the world. Over the past few years, increase in computational power and availability of Open source/low cost solver has showcased CFD as a tool. The usage of this tool is moving from subject matter experts to design & process engineers.

CFD Analysis provides chemical engineers with detailed insights into the fluid flow phenomenon in process equipment. This allows engineers to understand the implications of equipment design and operating conditions on equipment performance. Unlike correlations, CFD analysis can account for non-standard modifications that are incorporated in equipment over the course of its active life. Thus predictions using CFD analysis are far more realistic than the predictions of the correlations which are based on standard lab or pilot scale equipment. This makes CFD analysis imperative during process optimization, scale-up, and intensification. Without building a physical model, it allows various physics to be examined in a virtual setting. Equipment at its full scale can be analysed, thereby eliminating scale-up related issues.

The objective of the course is to introduce Process engineers to CFD analysis and discuss how CFD results can be used to solving mixing problems. The course will cover the basic aspects of CFD. The highlights of the course are as follows –

    • General CFD introduction – background of CFD, various applications and role of CFD engineer
    • Theory – A high level overview of governing equations, discretization methods and numerical techniques
    • Use of CFD analysis to evaluate the performance of Stirred tank (Chemical process equipment) – Understanding the results and learning how to apply it to solve problems
    • Optimizing stirred tank configuration & its operations using CFD models for various class of mixing problems
    • Includes hands-on sessions and access to software is provided.
